1) Give a description of the problem
(trying to get the piston to play a MP3 when my door is open but its not working)

2) What is the expected behavior?
(door opens, supposed to play mp3 from the web)

3) What is happening/not happening?
(my echo does not play the mp3 but it does speak the written text I put as a test!

What is Music Player 1 in your piston?

#3

Its my 3rd gen echo dot. The pause and spoken phrase work but not the actual mp3

#4

Ah, Amazon does not allow us to play mp3 or sound files to the echo devices but you can play a specific sound effect from the Amazon library using the searchAmazonMusic() command.

#5

100% certain?

I saw some other posts about this but no one said that mp3s wont play.

If that is the case, what would be my next step? Google home possibly? Or another speaker altogether?

#6

I don’t know if Amazon is going to allow receiving mp3s in the near future.
I have mix Echos and Sonos speakers in the house, had I known the limitations early on, I would have gone only for sonos speakers - Alexa enabled ones -

Hi @eibyer
I haven’t used echo speaks my self but I hear that people are having problems with mp3 playing.
Do you know anything about that?

#9

I use it and no mp3 playback allowed, first thing I tried when I installed it as I was replicating what I was doing with vlcthing.

#10

Oh I see…
ok thank you for the info.

#11

Anyone try something similar with google home or should i just get the sonos?

#12

cast-web-api works great with Google Home. Complicated to set up, but it works.

I have heard many complaints about inconsistency with Sonos as well…

I use this method and a 20 year old speaker with rock solid reliability.
(both for verbal alerts as well as MP3/sound effects)
