Trying to create a piston that will send a ‘Goodbye’ message to only the person who is leaving, if we both leave then the lights get turned off aswell.

You can send a sms message without contact book. You just need to enter in the phone number for the person to get the message. You can also send sms to contacts. For that you need contact book enabled.
This is also correct. Only reason I suggested contact book was because the piston posted above was pulled from an example I put on the wiki and that is how it was done.
