Newbie having problems with Under Cab lights

I would like to start with I am not a computer expert and I have had to work pretty hard to get to even this basic level so thank you in advance for your understanding.

1) Give a description of the problem
I would like my LED under cabinet lights to turn on at 30% when the ambient light in the room is low. When there is motion detected I would like them to turn up to 100% and stay that way for 10 minutes. I have re done my piston like ten times with different styles of programming that i have found on here to do avail. I have also tried changing the TCP and that didn’t seem to help but maybe i did it wrong.

3) What is happening/not happening?
the lights come on as expected. turn up to 100% with motion but almost right away go back to 30%, then a second later probably when it detects motion again goes up to 100% and repeats as longs as someone is in the room.

You have zero triggers here, so all of your conditions become triggers. (lightning bolts in the left margin) What this means in laymans terms is the piston runs thru the code top to bottom whenever the motion changes at all, and whenever illumination changes.

Personally, I will NEVER use illumination as a trigger… It changes every few moments throughout the day.

Also, if Dimmer 1 is near Motion Sensor 3, then each time the light changes, then the illumination will also change… Potentially creating an endless loop.

I might structure it something like this:

IF Motion changes to active          <-- Trigger
Then
    IF illumination < 40lux          <-- Condition
    Then
        Set Dimmer to 100%
    END IF
END IF

IF Motion stays inactive for 10 min  <-- Trigger
Then
    IF illumination < 30lux          <-- Condition
    Then
        Set Dimmer to 30%
    Else
        Turn off Dimmer
    END IF
END IF

This method only checks the lux value when you first walk in the room, and 10 minutes after you leave.

The only scenario this does not cover is automatic lights when the house is empty.

thanks for the input. Im having a hard time wrapping my head around conditions and triggers and how the piston runs through the code. Hope this gets easier with some practice.

The easiest way to remember the difference is:

Triggers are precise moments in time (only true for a moment)
Conditions are vague windows of time (true for an extended time)

I try to think logically when coding. IE: At what precise moment do I want something to happen? Then I make a trigger for that. Underneath that trigger, I may have many conditional IFs that branch off depending on other circumstances.
