Connecting hue bulbs to ST hub directly?

#1

whats a reliable way to do this and which DH surfaces all capabilities of the bulb?

thanks!

I thought that this was not possible as per a thread I saw up @ SmartThings.
You still need the Hue Bridge.
“To my understanding”

yes, i have seen a couple of conflicting posts on this also. thought i would ask here and see what responses we get.

You need a Lutron Remote to “format” the bulb config - forces it out of the controller’s network. Then simply discover them with the ST app. I bought a remote just for that…

thank you, thats going to be here tomorrow.

which DH, GE link?

First, use the remote to forcefully unpair the lights from the Hue. Look up the ST forum there is a thread that explains the process, you need to be a few inches away from the bulb and press a combination of keys on the remote. Then in ST you simply look for new devices. You beed to do the same if you want to put the bulbs back into the Hue bridge, the remote allows the exclusion from the hub. I have not yet found a way to use the remote in ST as a useful device, if you do, let me know.

I applied the same procedure to reset the bulbs from the Hue bridge. Never reset them while connected to ST because I would not go back to using the bridge, but it is possible.

thank you. but i think i am going to return the hue e12 bulb and the remote. i was looking at these bulbs for the landing lights which are E12, but found a better solution in ikea tradfri.

To clear this up up…
Yes, you can connect a Hue bulb directly to the ST hub. You can also remove it from the ST Hub as long as you do it via the app and you will be able to repair it again.

You need a Lutron remote or Hue hub to reset the Hue bulb ONLY if the device is unreachable by the hub to send the leave network command. For example if the bulb becomes unresponsive and you can’t control it from the ST app anymore, then you will need either the Lutron remote or Hue Hub to reset it. This is because Hue bulbs don’t support a manual reset procedure like most other Smart bulbs.

Ady and Vlad are spot on.

I’ve been using three of them for months, one being outside, and they work very reliably and are responding very quickly to commands. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy a dozen more if I needed to.

The DH I’ve been using is ZLL White Color Temperature Bulb. I don’t know if it’s the absolute best you can use, but it’s been good to me. Of course, if you buy color bulb you’ll need to use another DH, like ZLL color …

I’ll be testing how they work in our extreme weather condition in the following months and report back. I’ll easily get a couple of -35c (-31f), which is way past operating temperature. A reddit user from Edmonton (Canada) said his bulb survived three of these winters and still rock.

Thanks for the clarification… I been using Lifx sense the Kickstart days… Its been a nightmare.

#11

thanks for clearing it up.

i have not played around with hue bulbs enough to know the answer - on the hue bulbs are you able to set the color temperature and/or level while they are off, so they come turn on with the right temperature/level settings?

thanks!

#12

Can’t confirm for temperature as mine doesn’t have this feature, but I can tell you can set the level while they’re off. It’s working beautifuly.

#13

thanks for confirming that. so, likely the temperature works as well if the bulb supports it.

i was thinking about this a bit and given the typically user use of these lights went ahead and put in this feature request:
