I’ve got presence sensors based on my phone and wife’s phone setup in ST but for reasons I can’t work out, neither of these ‘devices’ appear list of physical or virtual devices when I’m creating a piston. Do I need to do some additional setup?

Did you add them in “available devices” in the webcore smartapp in Smartthings mobile app?
I guess that’s what you meant by “set up” in ST but just checking, in case…

Have you configured them in the mobile app.
You need to open the webCoRE smartapp in the ST app on your mobile phone.
Then configure the devices as presence sensors.

Ah yes, noob mistake. Sorry, I totally forgot I needed to add the devices to the webCoRE SmartApp. Done and now I can use the presence sensors in pistons
