Sunset versus $sunset

This has probably been covered before but my search could not find the answer. What is the difference between sunset and $sunset ? How do I use them?

I believe sunset is only available in the presets while $sunset is available everywhere you can use a variable. And for kicks fire up a test piston and I will guess that it gives you the same value.
