Very simple piston was working but now it doesn't

#1

1) Give a description of the problem
As you can see. You walk into a room light turns on. (wall switch)
No motion for a minute light turns off
Not smart lights but the switch is smart.

And after almost a year working without any problems, it stopped working the other day. Lights are not turning ON and if turn them on manually, not turning OFF after a minute…

and I see the tiny little green light in the motionsensor blinks when you walk in.

I would normally try the followings

  • Delete and re-write the piston (this one has worked a few times)
  • Change the battery
  • Turn off/on St hub
  • Kick the smart outlet a couple of times LOL
    etc…

The reason why i am asking WebCoRe community help so that I can learn proper way of trouble shooting.

I have not taking any steps yet…
how can I trouble shoot this and solve it?

Thank you so much for your time and help…
Ike

From looking at the log, it appears that the Pantry wall switch is not responding to webCoRE’s requests.
I would run the following tests (in order)

  • See if the SmartThings app can turn on or off that bulb.
  • If ST can control the lights, then I would make a new piston with only one line:

temp

  • Push TEST.
  • If this new piston works, then that means your old piston somehow got corrupted.
  • If the new piston fails to control the light, then I would test a manual wall switch. (you already did this though).
  • I would probably check the List of Events in the IDE next
  • If no clues are there, then try rebooting the hub. (leaving it off for at least 20 seconds)

If none of these reveal or fix the issue, then I might consider other more extreme measures.

Oh man
I really hoped this would have taken longer to trouble shoot (just to learn more:)))
Yes, I could not control the swithc from ST app.
Removing from the St hub and adding it back solved it…

thanks @WCmore AND no thanks (for solving it this quick LOL) :joy::joy::joy::joy:

Sorry to let you down, LOL

There was an older teacher at my school who often called me in to help her with a computer problem. She’d try to fix it herself for an hour, and finally call me, whereupon I’d fix it in 10 seconds.

She was very grateful, but talked about how embarrassing it was that I would fix everything so fast. It was usually some dumb setting that got flipped, or just turning it off and on, lol.

@Mebejedi Eric, I knew it was you :)))) LOL

I love fixing things so fast…But just for this one I thought it would be a nice leraning experince…
Any way I am sure I can come with another problem soon LOL
