What happens to a piston while editing?

OK: General WC question, but I don’t see a topic for that.

Situation:

I have a piston.
It works.
It is running.
I open the piston to edit.

Question

Does the piston pause while being edited? Or does it keep chugging along until the updated piston is saved?

From my observations, the old code will continue to run while I am editing it, and will not switch over to the new code until I save it…
